Group for Men with Eating Disorders

Change behaviour. Outgrow Your Eating Disorder

Male Eating Disorder therapist for men. Confidential & Private. Holistic Approach. BACP Registered. Ready to help.

Why a group for men with eating disorder and body image problems

Men are affected by eating disorders just like women but 7 out of 10 men will never seek treatment for it. This is because of stigma that men experience about mental health and the lack of male oriented eating disorder treatment programs. The majority of support services are geared towards women and some men fear being labelled as gay if the disclose their eating disorders.

Men struggling with eating disorders are also affected by body image issues. They are worried, amongst other things, about the size of their penis which can be embarrassing to discuss.

The lack of male oriented services and the stigma that men experience make it more important than ever to talk about men with eating disorders and body image issues.

 • Specialist Eating Disorder Training

Eating Disorder and body image problems are a specialist area of counselling. I have undergone additional training in this field.

 • Online group sessions

Work with me wherever you are via zoom.

 • Evening Sessions

Fortnightly meetings in the evening.

My mission is to help men feel at peace with food and their body so you can thrive.

Research shows that men develop eating disorders and body image issues as a way of controlling thoughts, emotions and life stressors that they are unable to regulate. Working together as a group men can identify and change the factors that maintain the eating disorder and body image issues.

Group Framework

The group is based on a trans-diagnostic framework. Clients with a diagnosis are as welcome as are those who don't neatly fit into a diagnostic category. Admission is subject to assessment to ensure a safe environment. The trans-diagnostic approach fits well with my core training in Psychosynthesis which focuses on clients' problems as well as their potential. Work on objectives is facilitated by using a pie slice approach. Every slice represents one of the issues commonly experienced by people with eating disorders. This supports members to structure their work and maintain a clear overview.

Services

As a male eating disorder therapist for men I can support you with eating problems that include but are not limited to the following

Binge Eating Treatment for Men

Binge Eating is the most common eating disorder experienced by men.

Some of the signs that you are binge eating include: secret eating, going on and off diets, a sense of having lost control over the quantity you eat.

If left unchecked binge eating can turn into bulimia or anorexia.

Bulimia Treatment for Men

Men can often develop bulimia out of a binge eating disorder or an existing eating disorder like anorexia.

Some of the diagnostic criteria for bulimia are recurring bingeing followed by recurring purging or compulsive exercise

Unlike women, men show different symptoms such as self worth based on muscularity, steroids and supplement abuse, muscle building exercise and wider co-existing mental health issues.

Contact me today to stop the binge purge cycle and restor self esteem.

Bigorexia - Muscle Dysmorphia Treatment for Men

Approximately 10% of men training at the gym have bigorexia (source BDDF).

Bigorexia happens when you perceive your body as not sufficiently muscular and you aim to gain weight without gaining fat. This is combined with excessive exercise dietary compulsion and use of performance enhancing drugs.

The result is an adverse impact on your body and limited social and occupation activity as all time and energy are invested in shaping your muscles.

Contact me today to improve the perception of your body and restore your social life.

Anorexia Treatment for Men

Anorexia in men entails a combination of physiological, bodily and behavioural issues such as loss of weight, weight loss behaviour, body image issues and the starving mind to mention a few.

These can affect libido and also give rise to social withdrawal, preoccupation with body parts, such as the size of genitals, and poor self esteem based on physique.

Together we can reverse the behaviour, believes and physical effects of anorexia and develop self esteem that enables you to thrive.

Contact me today to tackle anorexia. The first conversation is fee of charge
