Telephone Counselling

How does telephone counselling work?

Telephone counselling also known as phone therapy or phone counselling, provides the same opportunities as face to face counselling. It is a confidential space where you can talk to a therapist about issues affecting your life. You can access therapy from the comfort of any safe space where you feel you can talk freely without being overheard or interrupted for the duration of the call. Phone therapy takes place at a per-arranged date and time.

Whilst a convenient option, telephone counselling is not a poorer alternative to face to face therapy. Research has shown that it can be just as effective as seeing a therapist in person.

During phone sessions you are not seen and don’t have to look the therapist in the eye. Some clients find this has a number of benefits and advantages and if you have arrived at this page then chances are you might too.

The safety of your own surrounding combined with the relief of not being seen can help you open up to a therapist in the way that you may not be able to were you to meet face to face.

  • Feeling shame

You may be experiencing problems that cause you to feel ashamed such as for example abuse, sexuality or a deed that you cannot forgive yourself for. Perhaps you are experiencing core shame (feeling ashamed of who you are). Phone counselling provides the perfect opportunity to work on such issues. Being in your own surroundings and not being seen by the therapist can put you at ease and lessen the shame you are feeling.

  • Fear of judgement

Strong fear of being judged, for whatever reason, can hinder clients from opening up. Often this fear is diminished if you know that the therapist can’t see you.

  • More personable

During phone sessions, the focus is on the voice of the client and therapist. Some clients report that this results in a closer therapeutic relationship with the therapist.

  • Less distraction

Video calls can be distracting due to lighting issues, unstable connection, quality of the camera and background of therapists room so many clients appreciate only having to focus on the voice of the therapist.

Is phone therapy effective – Does phone counselling work?

A recent study has found that nearly 60% of clients who experienced both face to face and telephone therapy preferred phone counselling.

Research has also shown that clients have found telephone counselling helpful for both overall and speck improvement and that they were satisfied with the counseling they received. Respondents also rated the counseling relationship and level of interpersonal influence similarly to face-to-face counseling studies measuring the same attributes. The telephone counseling results are given in the context of face-to-face counseling data from other studies. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
